There are times when people want to set up their own fund, so that it carries their name, and so that they can direct how the funds are spent. But there are also times when people want to contribute to something that is already helping people in the community. At the Community Foundation we have a range of established funds that you can contribute to. Some of them are for specific areas, and are called our place based funds, whereas others are themed funds. You can learn more about them below.
Our place based funds are set up to benefit a specific area of the county. They usually align with local authority boundaries, but they are wholly independent of local councils. They are funds which are made up of smaller donations, where working together with other similar minded donors can bring a greater benefit to people than one person could on their own.
The focus or theme of each fund is quite broad, so that it can be used to respond to changing needs. The only thing that matters is that it benefits charitable causes and helps to support people in the area you want to support. Sometimes you may want to make a contribution to a fund that is more closely aligned to a cause that you would like to support. At the Community Foundation we manage more than 40 funds that aim to respond to different causes. Sometimes, people want to donate but don’t know exactly which cause they want to support, or they want to support a few different causes. In cases like that, our general fund is a perfect way of supporting your community. Contributions to our general fund are used to support organisations and projects that have a fantastically beneficial effect on our community and the people in it, but where they don’t fit in to any one category. This fund is classed as discretionary, and adapts to changing needs and demands over time. The flexibility is the strength of it.
